View Full Version : Dial up problem

Hi all,
I have recently downloaded and did a clean install of Fedora Core 5 and all goes well until I connect to the internet through a hardware external 56k modem. It dials and connects to my ISP ok but after a minute or two (sometimes less) of browsing the computer locks solid. The keyboard and mouse are totally unresponsive and the only way out is to hit the reset button. It is not the modem at fault because it still works in Windows and was working ok in Fedora Core 4. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help with the solution, but I have exactly the same problem. I use a broadband connection for most things but keep a pay-as-you-go dial up account for E-mail as a means of supporting the Linux community. In the past I have never had any problems, but:

FC5 - both released kernels lock up just as you describe.
FC4 - newest kernel locks up, but if I boot into the last kernel all is well.
RH9 - Yes I've kept RH9! - 'cos it was my introduction to Linux and showed me the light - no issues any kernel.

An examination of the system logs doesn't reveal anything much except an SHM memory error with FC4 2069.

Like you I'm in need of more experienced assistance.
