Hello
I have quite annoing problem. When hard drive is very busy (like copying large files (~GB) between partitions ) other programs are working veeery slow. For example, while copying i run firefox and it takes 1-2minute to start! Or in mc, to view a few kB text file i have to wait 1minute!
But when the disk isn's loaded everything runs fast...
I have Abit NF7-S with Sil3112A and Maxtor 16MB cache and NCQ.
dmesg shows that disk runs with UDMA100
hdparm gives good speed ~60MB/s.
System is FC5 but in FC4 there was also the same problem.
Anybody knows what's going on?

You could try running the copy under a lower priority. Open a terminal and enter "nice bash". Start copying from there.

Disk copying will be faster if you use separate disks and IDE cables for source and destination. SATA works even faster. However, the moving of disk head is 1000 times slower than any data transfer. Take that into account.

I forgot, this disk is SATA. I know that disks are generally not so fast, but when i had old PATA WD Caviar 7200rpm, 8MB cache everything run smoothly. But now it's not acceptable - there is no way to work on this system :-/
