View Full Version : gnome menus vanish after 'yum install mplayer'

Hi all,

The standard menu items "Applications", "Places" and "Desktop" that by default appear on the panel thingy -- mine is across the top of the desktop -- suddenly vanished. The last thing I did before it happened was I installed a media player by running "sudo install --yes mplayer." I am running FC4.

Any hints how to restore these?

Thanks much,

open a terminal and type:
$ gnome-panel
does that help?

when I get home to where the box in question lives, I will surely give it a shot and let you know.

UPDATE: that didn't do it. I got an error saying an instance was already running and it exited. In desperation I tried running it as root, and that brought back the Applications/Places/Desktop menus, but seemed to destabilize the Top Panel, it behaved strangely, e..g menus would jump in and out of visibility when I moused over things.

So, just out of curiosity, I experimented with right clickl on Top Panel --> Add to Panel -> Menu Bar "A custom menu bar' and voilą, that did it.
