FC5 kicks ass and I'm not the only one who thinks so...
Just installed FC5 and I just wanted to say it rocks... I think the rendering project's "early" demonstrations are quite noticeable and it's just very gratifying to see the fedora logo everywhere. Nobody told me that amaroK 1.4 beta is on the extras and some of the new apps (I'm still exploring that photo manager software) would really make computing a lot more fun for me. Quite surprising. I haven't felt this excited for a long while. Only bad thing is that you've gotta wait for a new kernel before you can use the video drivers.
The funny thing is that everyone's updating and using the extras repo such that I keep getting kicked out of the servers when I'm using yum... arrgh. Gotta figure out the mirrors thing.
To the Fedora team, I haven't used this for more than an hour, but I'm more than convinced this thing rules. Looking forward to Six!

My dad installed FC5 yesterday and gives it a thumbs up. I tried the bittorrent and the mirrors over my satellite connection and finally gave up. I will get a dvd from him tomorrow. Cant wait! He had the few minor quibbles and bugs that we worked through over the phone but for the most part he says it is a huge improvement over FC4. His biggest complaint: KDE was not installed in his iso? We had to yum install it. But it went in and everything is up and running now.

According to the release notes:

Early work from the Fedora Rendering Project is integrated into the desktop. This new project (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject) is going to provide the technical foundations for advanced desktop interfaces based on OpenGL.
|
I am using KDE on my FC5 and at least I think there are a lot more options to enable eye candy in this release than the last one, and I think there are quite a few changes to the font and window rendering. Nowhere as cool as xgl but I guess you'd really only notice it if you're looking for it.

Thanks for the feedback. The mirrors are quite busy and you might need to rerun yum on occasions.

I just updated last night, i expected to have many problems but i must say this release is a lot faster. My system started up much faster. The response time is much better, and before i updated i was having problems with viewing and mounting my thumb drive and ipod, but its all working perfectly fine. The only issue that i had was with YUM, i did a yum update as soon as i boot it up and it couldn't fine a mirror, i figured that i just had to reconfigure YUM adding all the repros, but hopefully i wont have to even do that. There were a lot of people online downloading the new distro and im sure many had the same idea in mind as far as updating the new distro, so it was probably too crowded for me to connect. Im going to try again tonight. But over all this is great new distro. Im sorry proud of the programmers who spend their time building this distro. Sometimes i feel bad that i dont have the knowledge to contruibute. Is there a way to give them (Props)=(credit) LOL for all their hard work?

I try to help where I can in this forum, but generally defer to those with greater knowledge. I will certainly read through these topics and see if I can find one where I belong. Open source and Fedora in particular are one of the best communities and bunch of people I have known.

Contributing: Answering questions in forums, helping newcomers. After some time you might know enough so that you feel you can contribute more to Linux. I'd like to contribute, too, but I am already tied up in another Linux project...
Ah, yes, before I forget it: Hats (Fedoras) off the the developers and everyone that contributed. This is a damn fine distro. Hard to beat for anyone.

I'm in love with Linux, Since one of my friends pointed me to Suse and I used that for about 2 weeks when he decided to point me in another direction to FC4 during my use of FC4 and the people of this forum constantly helping me out and just being the nice people they are, I fell in love with linux. Everyday theres something new to learn about it for me. Windows got so boring because I used it to much and figured out how to do basically anything I needed on it, Linux is different, it's new to me :P. I'm like a child with a new aciton figure, hear me roar!!!(meow)

Btw, how many disks are required to install FC5? I don't want to waste time downloading all 5 discs. I can get other software via Yum.
