FC5 FTP install failure

I'm a bit frustrated... Downloaded over 3GB of FC5 DVD iso (took a while) and put the contents on the /var/ftp/pub dir on a second machine running FC4, and set up vsftp on that second machine.
On my computer, I can boot into windows and ftp to the second machine and see and download the files using anonymous ftp connection. I have a big chunk of blank space on my computer to put FC5 onto.
Write boot.iso to a CD and restart. Run thru the options and select ftp install, type in 192.168.5.2, mask 255.255.255.0 for my computer, and for the ftp server, type in 192.168.5.4 and directory is 'pub'. Don't select 'non-anonymous' connection. End result is that there is an error message 'Failed to connect to FTP server'.
When it goes back, 'pub' is now '/pub'. Does that matter?? Tried all combinations of dir names, but all fail. Also try a user name ftp connection, but no luck.
Now this really sucks big time. What failed??? The installer is useless in terms of the information it provides. Did the network card fail? Did the ability to reach the other machine fail? Did the authentication to the ftp server fail? Did the path name get entered wrongly? This feedback could be a strong item for inclusion in the future... hint hint.
On the second computer, I can't ping my computer while it is sitting at the installer ftp screen. Should I be able to?? Or does the installer not respond to pings? VSFTPd refuses to output any sort of log file of note on the second computer either, so don't know what is going on there.
Sigh, do I have to download another 3.3GB and burn 5 CDs (I don't have a DVD drive or burner)???

Any thoughts/help appreciated.

Switch to other virtual terminals Ctrl + Alt + F2 (and F3) for more information and a shell.

It's not obvious from the install guide but you need to extact the files from the iso and make it look like this. This is refered to as the exploded tree.

Still no luck. Http and NFS don't seem to work either. Ctrl-Alt_f3 and f4 bring up some boot logging info, but none of the terminals have a shell prompt.

Perhaps the network card is not being recognised, although it was fine while doing an ftp install of FC4 a few months ago.

Anyway, I'm downloading the cd images of FC5 and will do it that way, perhaps burn to CD or put them on a fat32 partition i have on the same drive. Seems to work ok.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Ok, solved what the problem was. The driver for my network card is apparently broken in the final release version of FC5, although it was supposedly working in FC5 Test3. It is a Davicom network adapter, and there are other reports in these forums about this broken driver. Which makes it rather somewhat harder to update using yum after installation if you don't have a network connection.

This explains why ftp, http and nfs installs didn't want to work. Lack of feedback info in the installer about problems doesn't help.

In the end, I downloaded the CD images and put them on a fat32 partition on the same computer and installed this way. Then I swapped my network card with the one from another machine.

I guess a lot of people who have Davicom network cards are going to have problems fixing up their computers after installing FC5 by whatever means. Either manually shift an updated kernel onto the machine, or find (temporarily) another network card.
