Unhappy fc4 samba problems

I setup samba and opened ports 137,138,139,445 on the firewall and I can reach my Linux box from windows xp but when I try to browse the samba shares from konqueror on my Linux box all I get is a "unable to find any workgroups etc. check your firewall", or on some occasions I see the windows machines on the network but when I try to access them I get a "could not connect to host for smb://hostname"
If I disable the firewall completely everything works fine

does anybody have any idea of what is happening?

Thanks for your help

thanks for your quick reply, but that is how my machine is setup and as proof I can access it from the network. My problem is that I cannot access windows machines from my linux box, and as I already stated everything works fine if the firewall is disbled the problems starts when I enable it with the above mentioned ports opened.

Are you sure they're added? TCP and UDP?
BTW, you also have to change your hostname from "localhost" to something else, and make sure the "AllowHosts" and "DenyHosts" lines are commented in smb.conf

Samba problems

To be specific, the default Windows local host is 'localhost' as it is, I believe, with FC4 with Samba loaded (I have this kind of server running and I changed the 'localhost' name in the FC4 machine).

Meanwhile, it seems fairly obvious your problem is with your firewall - no? So how about some information on what type of firewall you are using, etc. And the firewall - I assume it's there for protection from outside intruders (i.e. INet)? Yes, no?

You should feel good that the system works and that it is apparently only your firewall that is mucking things up.
