PPPOE setup on RedHat Linux/ Fedora

Hello,

I have written a tutorial that will help you configure a PPPOE connection (broadband) connection on RedHat Linux 9 or any of the Fedora Core flavours.

I am using Tata indicom so screenshots will discuss configuring Tata Indicom connection on Linux but if you know the AC name for your connection (i.e. VSNL_BRAS_1 in case of Tata Indicom) you can easily replace VSNL_BRAS_1 with the name of your access concentrator (service) and can configure any PPPOE (i.e. internet via LAN) on Linux.

The link to the tutorial is as follows.
Configure PPPOE on Redhat/Fedora Core Linux

Hi,
Firstly before I explain my problem let me clearly state that I am new to Fedora and I know nothing about it.
I have a dual boot system with WinXp and FC3. I have a broadband connection from VSNL. Previously I had used quite easily requiring no setup as such in FC3.
But sometime ago I faced some problem with my account and upon further checking I found out that my LAN card was out. I got a new one (old one still exists since it is a on-board one) and installed it. I checked in WinXP and the connection works fine using the new LAN card.
But when I tried to configure the same connection in FC3 again, I was not successful. Then I came through your How-To article. I followed all the steps as mentioned in your article but still couldn't succeed.
Everything went fine until the Service Name thing.
When I give the command /sbin/pppoe -A, I get the message "Timeout waiting for PADO packets"
I tried without giving the Service Name - i finally get the message that Activation of VSNL failed.

Can you help me in this?
Please let me know if you need further information.

Thanks
Satish.

Hi Satish,

Now lets analyse this. You say the you have no issues till step 10.

So I assume:

1. That your ethernet connection is working fine. (Is it shown Active as in Step 5 ?)

Probably you can try these things :

1. since you are not using your onboard ethernet card you can goto BIOS and disable it. Try doing the entire process as explained on http://hemenkapadia.somee.com/tutorial/html/rhnet.asp again.

2. If this did not work then.....Verify that in step 7 you have selected the correct ethernet device

3. Or check if there are any driver related issues for the ethernet card (new one) that you are using.

....And still if it does not work.....

4. Post a message here with additional information...and we will try again....

Re: PPPOE setup on RedHat Linux/ Fedora

I am using F14 KDE version.

I got my dsl/pppoe configured wrongly, how could I reconfigure it?

How could I delete the former configuration?

I used the command in the terminal.

When I repeat the configuring process, it is not the ppp0 configured but ppp1 and ppp2, corresponding to the eth0.
