desktop problem

Hi
I am running FC4 and have kernel versions 2.6.15-1.1831 and 1369. everything was running fine, infact i hadnt restarted in probialy a month, then the power went out at my house. when i got around to restarting the system, it loaded fine up to the login screen. when i log on it doesnt go to my desktop like it used to. it seems to start in the equiv to windoes "safe mode". all thats open is xsm, twm and xterm. the only one i know is xterm, the others i've never seen before. It doesnt matter if i log in as a root or user, GNOME or default, or what version of the kernel i use.

Im somewhat of a linux noob, but im not an idoit so any help would be apreciated. im sure its an easy fix, i've just never seen somthing like this before. thanks

Could try this as root in the xterm
log in as root
do this

cd ..
touch ./forcefsck
fixfiles relabel; reboot

and answer yes to deleting /tmp files and let it run then it will reboot...
andthen it will do a file system check..won't hurt--might work..
