Increasing max volume?

Is there any way to "force" a laptop's volume higher than the volume controls will allow? I have the speakers high as they go, and the system volume is at 100%

I'm alright with the current volume, but I think it would be nice to get it a little bit louder.

Might help if you gave us hardware stats. My Dell Laptop needs the "external amplifier" turned on for any real volume. (even though it is internal to the machine -- go figure)

Alright, I can do that but I'm not at home right now and I don't know the stats at the moment.
