Smile Getting latest versions of software

Hi

I'm in the process of changing over to Fedora Core 4. I'm starting up a web development business so I need the latest versions of software like Firefox and OpenOffice.org etc

If the latest versions are not available as rpms through the normal repostories is there a recomended way of just downloading the rpms (or tar files) from the software's site and installing from that?

This is a real issue for me as I don't like the delay between getting the latest versions of software for Windows and getting them for Fedora. I really need to do things like test web sites in the latest versions of Firefox etc

Thanks

pamount

Hi

I was just looking over my older posts and I remembered I got an answer in this

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=89974

I've actually just got some paid work to do for my business so I guess I got so excited I just forgot I received that tip. Although it would be good to maybe get some more tips or a pointer to a web site that explains more fully about how to install the latest versions of software from tar.gz files in the safest manner.

Have a good day

I personally avoid using anything but packages from Fedora repositories. Easier to manage when it's all Fedora rpms.

For FC4, openoffice.org is at the moment up to date with 2.0.1.

Firefox is not. However, you can find some "alternatives" style repositories to get 1.5. I recommend Ignacio's.

Thanks Jman

I'll look at Ignacio's today. I've made it my "personal mission" to change to Linux and I'm having a go with it by giving Fedora Core 4 a good try. I'll only change distros now if I have a real reason too.

Have fun
