    Exclamation WARNING: Using ATRPMS repo disables standard Fedora repositories

    I have just realized that ATRpms replaces the core yum repositories if you install the rpm with their configuration. This is not a good thing. This was done without much notice, and so I was very surpriced to see this change.

    This has made it impossible for me to install some software, simply because a lot of the ATRPM mirrors do not work most of the time.

    ATRPM is not the most compatible repository (I have had to reinstall when I used this repository a couple of times), and should be avoided - the highjacking of yum is only that much more of a reason. I have not found anything on ATrpm that I cannot find any other place, also it replaces core packages (basicly everything), ATRPM is more another disitrbution, than it is a repository for FC,

    Please make this sticky.

    Sticky done - is this what you're referring to? http://atrpms.net/name/atrpms-kickstart/ - it would be good to point to what should be avoided.

    If you have read the fedora FAQ you will know about ATRPMS.
    I use ATRPMS only to install some packages but never core packages so I donot have any problem.

    Exactly. I have ATRPMS on my system, but it's yum config has the
    Code:
    enabled=0
    in it so it wont do anything unless I manually tell it to. Some packages are useful from them; Like SmartPM (AMAZING package manager) & W32codecs (enables ASF/X, WMV v2,3 & 9 playback!)
    Update 2008/07/03: SmartPM is now available in the Fedora repositories and w32codecs is obsolete.

    I've just checked the official FAQ and the unofficial FAQ. I couldn't find it. Please point me to which FAQ you are talking about.

    I was ofcourse, refering to ATRPM when I was talking about avoiding something.

    The package to avoid would be: atrpms-package-config

    The only thing I have found on ATrpms but nowhere else is MythTV. I tried to avoid ATrpms by recompiling MythTV myself, but it seems not to be possible with GCC 4. I got plenty of compilation errors, and I could not find any solution. Nevertheless, MythTV does not work for me. It does not work out of the box, and I cannot access to the configuration, because every text appears huge and important information is clipped. For the first time, I find the font size too large...

    Just manually add it into /etc/yum.repos.d. It's all explained in their installation instructions. Works great with yum, and replaces none of the official Fedora repositories.

    No, that's the thing. It does, if you look. But if you go all out 100% ATRPMS then it's OK. Basically, it's use Fedora's repos or ATRPM's.

    Is it possible to tell yum to only grab *certain* packages from a repository? I would like yum to get the ivtv driver (and possibly mythTV, but i'll probably just compile that myself and put it in /usr/local) from ATrpm's, and everything else from base/updates/extras/livna.

    Is this possible?

    I can see the packages in
    http://atrpms.net/dist/fc5/ivtv/
    and this far i have just downloaded them with firefox and installed with rpm -ivh (also installed all the firmware things from atprms -> distro independent), but having yum to automagically update them when there is a new kernel would be great.

    Thank you! So adding a file containing this
    [atrpms-in]
    name=Fedora Core 5 - i386 - ATrpms
    baseurl=http://dl.atrpms.net/fc5-i386/atrpms/stable
    failovermethod=priority
    enabled=1
    gpgcheck=1
    gpgkey=http://ATrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms
    includepkgs="*ivtv*"
    to /etc/yum.repos.d/ will make aviable everything with ivtv in its name from atrpms, and mask out everything else? (ie. does it support globbing? Yum normaly seems to do that in yum search, but i'm just asking to be shure.)

    Here's an even worse theory that I can't prove....but suspect.
    Atrpms installs an atrpms.rpm as a dependancy to any package you install.
    And at some point, it rewrites your yum.repos.d files.
    I know it happens with atrpm kickstarts...

    Doubtfull. I have installed ivtv rpms (driver and firmware) from atrpms using rpm -ivh, and have had no problems (missing deps etc). And i have not installed any atrpms-release etc. package.

    No -- In my howtos I use the w32codecs RPM -- Some aren't dep-crazy, while some are which will pull in a bunch of others, and these will replace base packages which is what the warning is about.
