Audio plugged in but....

device/dev/dsp can't be opened. Sound server will continue, using the null output device. I get this notice when I boot up with Fedora 4 on an old Gateway E-4200 with a new Westinghouse LCD monitor with built-in speakers. Speakers are so low tech I am surprised that there is any problem. Thanks in advance for any help.
