Well, I'm running FC4 and I can't use my winmodem anymore because of the 2.6.x kernel, so I went out today and bought myself a new HARDWARE CONTROLLED modem. At first, I had no luck. Now, I'm just confused. Here are the various things I'm experiencing, maybe you can piece them together and give me some info.
First off, when I boot up (at the starting acpi part) AND/OR when I try and install the RPM from USR, I get the following output:
Cannot set serial info: Invalid argument
Cannot set serial info: Invalid argument
Cannot set serial info: Invalid argument
Cannot set serial info: Invalid argument
Cannot set serial info: Invalid argument
Cannot set serial info: Invalid argument
/dev/ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS1 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS2 at 0xd000 (irq = 11) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS4 at 0xdc00 (irq = 11) is a 16550A
What the hell does that mean? I tried switching PCI slots with the cards, removing all but the necessary PCI devices in my computer, etc. According to windows, my card is running on interrupt req. 7, comm5, device 15. looks like it's not detecting the modem, doesn't it? Well here's the weird part! kPPP can't detect the modem at ttyS0 thru 4, or at /dev/modem. HOWEVER, I tried configuring wvdial and once I did that, I can get wvdial to dial out. It dials out, does the usual wvdial stuff (u/n prompt, pw prompt, 'looks like a welcome message', gives me my mtu, IP, dns info, etc.), but none of my browsers seem to work (can't connect) and ping just says 'unknown host', usually a sign of no internet connection.
I dunno, guys (and gals), I'm stumped. Someone help!!!!
(by the way, the modem works in windows, of course... so we know the hardware works at least)
thnx,
eric
