Question 64-bit windows?

I have a laptop with an AMD64 3000+ in it. I have a dual boot with FC4 x86_64, and 32-bit windows XP. The 64 bit version of FC seems to be faster then the 32 bit version of FC, would it be worth while going to the 64-bit version on windows as well?

Windows 64 bit is a little faster but only when the software is 64 bit. Most software I used in Windows didnt have a 64 version, so it didnt help much. And I also had some problems with a driver, so I format it and installed FC4 instead
So I think its too early to install Win64 since there is very few Windows software that is developed on it. But if you really awnt 64 bit Windows, try to check if all driver (and programs) you use is supported.

Well I don't use that many apps in windows other then Visual Studio, and i dont think there is a 64 bit version... so i guess it wouldnt be worth my time in setting it up.

Wrong...

64 bit windows is programmed to let 32bit programs access way more pagefile space than ordinary windows 32bit.

The only problems you will find is that still some new games use 32bit installers and may have a 16bit cd checker utility like Area 51 does or it can have a 16bit installer and still be a 32bit game like the old star trek voyager elite force. If either of these cases are true, you will not be able to use that software. Oh that means games like the original Deus Ex and Ghost Recons and Star Trek Klingon Academy will work though because the system manages to make the 16bit installer if it has that into a 32bit installer and 32bit program.

I perfer x64 Windows XP over FC3, FC4, FC5 because of it being easier to use and it works great with my hardware set up. You didn't say what manufacture of your laptop you use. But my desktop is a Gateway Desktop and it has lots of propreitary stuff on it and it runs better in x64 than any Linux distro.

That just my observations...

Do you think the performace gain from 32-bit windows to a 64-bit windows is significant? It takes alot of time for me to format and set everything back up so i guess what i am asking would it be worth doing all that work?

Sorry I been working on repairing a broken Fedora Install...

Yes I think it is worth giving 64bit Windows XP x64 a try. They have an evaluation edition for 120 days. And you will find your self using Microsoft Community Help Services a lot.

I think that in the end if you want functionality and productivity without having to constantly work on or find work arounds to get by without such and such program, Windows XP x64 Pro is for you.

However, I think that in the end, since you have been using linux at least a little. In the end, it would be better for you to learn and help develop the x86_64 architecture of linux namely fedora. I seen that it is constantly updating it self and has become a much better 64bit OS than it was in FC2 or FC3. By FC7 it should be extremely good.

I am not saying yah or nay against trying Windows XP x64 but it would be more benefitual to you and your wallet to wait until Windows Vista x64 comes out. (Yes windows xp x64 pro has a lot of major problems but it is really stable to use if you use it with things that are compatible) but the lack of norton antivirus and other programs support under it, I will not say use it or not. But be adventurous and see for yourself if you want. But you will have a really big problem if you try to go the dual boot or triple boot route.
