Cannot install NVIDIA drivers NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run

I'm running Fedora Core 4 and trying to install the new NVIDIA driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run, however it fails telling me that I have the wrong gcc version. It seems the yum updated gcc to 4 when it updated the kernel to 2.6.14-1.1653_FC4smp. I tried using the livna.org kernel-module + nvidia-glx but although it installs without a hitch, when I try and start it (init 5) it does nothing and the log shows no errors but tell me that it can find no usable screens.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong. Everything was working fine and I did a yum update and it installed a whole pile of stuff and now I can't get the NVIDIA drivers to work.

I managed to install the nvidia driver and I have gcc 4.0.2. I also have the same kernel version as you.
does it say anything specific apart from the version of gcc being wrong?

No it just said something about the cc test failing. I'm gonna reboot and get the exact message.
I have :

aaa, mine comes up as:
gcc (GCC) 4.0.2 20051125 (Red Hat 4.0.2-8)
Perhaps try updating the compiler again?

I tried an update just a while ago when you showed me but it comes back with no updates. Do you know which repository would have the gcc. I would think it would be base.

I have absoluteky no idea about which repository, sorry.
you could download and build the source from: http://gcc.gnu.org/

EDIT: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...pdates/4/i386/
I found this when doing a search for RPMs, gcc 4.0.2

OK. That was the problem. I downloaded the gcc and cpp rpm's and installed them and eveything wrked. For some reasom yum did not update the gcc and cpp.

Thanks a million!!. Now it really is a Happy new Year.
