Newbie: internet not working but network is fine, I think
I have a laptop with Intel/Pro wireless and Realtek RTL8169/8110 Gigabyte card, it seems wireless was in conflict with NIC, so after much work, it seems wireless' problem is solved, and NIC seems fine too (at least I can probe the MAC address on both, which I couldn't do before updating the wireless driver). Now I tried to connect to internet through NIC and got no response, this is my configuration, it's static IP:
IP address: 192.168.6.22
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.6.1
DNS server: 202.96.209.6
this is the output when I tried to ping DNS and gateway, what I'm missing?

sorry for the late reply, I had problem with my laptop and had to send it to services, sorry about the delay. I tried to use ifconfig and modprobe, but none of them are available, how is that possible? I've installed the standard workstation package, except for the XWin delopment and other development packages, but I think either ifconfig or modprobe should be in the utilities or network management packages, and those I've installed, I tried to run it as root and as user michael, how can I install it separately?

It's likely that you have ifconfig and modprobe but it's not on your path, they are at
/sbin/ifconfig
/sbin/modprobe

When I type /sbin/modprobe I receive this:

Trek1701, that's because modprobe is supposed to be passed the file name of the
module you're trying to load to the kernel. If you just type modprobe it's not
enough information. You might not even need modprobe for the issue you
are talking about, I was just telling you
where it was because you were asking where it was.
My guess is you don't have your gateway set properly,
post what these commands say:
/sbin/route
cat /etc/resolv.conf
cat /etc/sysconfig/network

so it seems the gateway is correct, except for the first 2 entries, where they came from? As for my name server, the first and last two are for my wireless.

I think you mean these?
192.168.6.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
the first is your local "NETWORK" entry, the 2nd one is something
called the Zeroconf entry. I'm not sure what it's for, I personally
disable zeroconf by putting this in the /etc/sysconfig/network file:
NOZEROCONF=yes
search google for NOZEROCONF and you'll see lots of info about it.
I just know it has no apparent use in linux for now (?) and
my philosophy is to keep the routing table as simple as you
can.
I'm not sure what's up with your network because your
output seems ok. I do see your Fedora is setting up IP6
support, I'm not using IP6 on my box by putting in the
/etc/modprobe.conf file:
alias ipv6 off
alias net-pf-10 off
these seem to deactivate IPV6

This all looks good, Rabbit, so I'm thinking its not a configuration problem -- it's a hardware problem.
Do you have a good connection to the Ethernet card? Link lights at both ends? What does the Ethernet card connect to?
This hardware problem that you mentioned at the top of the thread -- could it still be killing this card?

Thanks funchords.
In Windows, I can use both NIC & wireless, in Linux, I had previously problem with the driver, after much effort, I updated the wireless driver and everything seems fine (at least I could probe the MAC address of NIC and wireless, which I could not do before updating the wireless driver), and now I can activate/deactivate both NIC and wireless, am I right to assume that the hardware is working fine in Linux? I did install FC1 before, and the NIC worked just fine, so my guess is something to do with FC4. Anything else I should try?

I only see the eth0 card in your ifconfig. Can you get both to show up?

It showed only eth0 because I only activated this one, I've tried with wireless, and it came up too, but has the same issue as NIC, I can't ping the gateway or DNS. Anything else I should try? Maybe it's better to go back to FC1, at least this way I'll have NIC up and running. Any suggestions?

I don't have that file, how that's possible? In the Desktop -> System Settings -> Network the card is there and I could configure it, so why the config file is not there? How can I create one?

Actually, the 169.254 series is APIPA -- ideal for connecting machines in an ad-hoc network. It is a snap to do in Windows, but I am discovering that something as basic as APIPA is still a mystery to Linux. It presents the routed subnet (169.254.0.0) but does not assign an address so my linked machines are not communicating. If anyone could oblige me with a solution I would appreciate it.
