Exclamation Problem with "Service Configuration" and xinetd

Okay, I'm embarrassed to ask this, since there seems to be something easy & glaring I'm missing... but...

I can't seem to enable services in the "Service Configuration" menu.

Specifically, I want to enable kshell. I have highlighted the check-box next to kshell (at all 3 run levels), then clicked "save." I've restarted the xinetd process. If I exit "Service Configuration" and go back in, the check boxes next to kshell are empty. If I reboot kshell is not running.

What am I missing here?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Use the command-line program "chkconfig" instead:
Code:
# chkconfig kshell on

of course you were doing the service "config"/save as root?
you could add the kshell command (/usr/bin/kshell) to the bottom of the
/etc/rc.local file and save that. (as root)
or as root
chkconfig --levels 35 kshell on

This looks like an actual bug in system-config-services, it won't turn on any xinetd-based services. I filed a Bugzilla report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=176671

Thanks for filing that report. Glad to know its not just me ;-).

I actually solved this problem by going into /etc/xinetd.d/kshell and changing the flag "disable = yes" to "disable = no" It looks like the bug is that these services are installed in a disabled mode.

Makes no sense to me...

That's not a bug, it's an essential security feature. All services that aren't required for basic system operation should be disabled by default.

For us Newbies, the Services Configuration Menu referred to above is accessed by Desktop, System Settings, Server Settings, Services.

Apparently, that runs "system-config-services" because you can get the same window (titled Service Configuaration) by entering system-config-services in a terminal window.

LJ

PS Now I know why /etc/xinetd.d/swat is installed with the line
disable = yes
when first installed and therefore Samba Swat refuses to run from localhost:901 .
It's a security feature!

Hmmm... I figured they were just not listed in /etc/xinetd.d/ at all if they shouldn't be running.
