where to put programs to start on x startup

I want to start some programs automatically when I log in and X starts up. What file should I put the lines in to start these programs. I'm using FC4.

Also, is there anywhere that explains what all the different configuration files do exactly?

Put the lines for programs you want to start in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

if u put somethign in /etc/rc.d/rc.local then that loads at boot and u can put something in ~/.bashrc to load it on login. ~ is your home dir

when using kde you can crate a link in ~/.kde/Autostart/
