MySQL installation problem

I am truly sorry for the number of posts I'm making, but I've been messing with this for a long time.

I am running FC2. I am trying to install MySQL 4.1.16

I could not use the MySQL 3.23 that was available on the repos.

Ok, I downloaded the RPM's from MySQL. Both client and server. I did:

Code:
# rpm -i MySQL-server-4.1.16-0.glibc23.i386.rpm
and I get this:

Code:
# rpm -i MySQL-server-4.1.16-0.glibc23.i386.rpm
ERROR: 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1

The "HELP" command might not work properly

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.

NOTE: If you are upgrading from a MySQL <= 3.22.10 you should run
the /usr/bin/mysql_fix_privilege_tables. Otherwise you will not be
able to use the new GRANT command!

Please report any problems with the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script!

dont worry about the posts... its good to ask questions

your best bet for installing mysql would be to set up your yum and put the yum.conf provided by fedorafaq.org and then run a

Code:
 yum remove mysql
followed by a
Code:
 yum install mysql
this will install all the correct matching parts and any other dependicies that are required by mysql to get it running

I was under the impression that I would be unable to get the newer versions of mysql becuase of running the FC2? And that the repositories would be all out of date?

it has been my exp ( past 3 years win , linux ) to build mysql and apache2 from source
source builds for me have been the best to install and update
and if you want to use php5 mysql MUST be built from source
take a look at the mysql help page.

I did try an install from source before where I am now ... but I would usually get some error after everything was done. So I opted for this.

Why is that? Do you have a link to an article mentioning some of the issues? I ask because I have a LAMP application running just fine with:

php-5.0.4-10.5
php-mysql-5.0.4-10.5
mysql-server-4.1.15-1.FC4.1

All installed via yum. I am running FC4, so maybe your comment was for older Core versions?
