Commands don't work in GNOME terminal

Group,

When I try and use the terminal under a GNOME session linux commands don't work as they should.
For example to run the command ifconfig you have to cd into sbin and type ./ifconfig Just typing "ifconfig" at the prompt doesn't work, it returns a command not found error. I have tried as a regular user and as root and I get same result. Thanks......................ringo

in order to run a command in /sbin you need full root privileges unless you have sudo priv's. Anyhow, what is posted above will work for you - su -. This because /sbin is in roots path and not anyone elses. As a regular user type echo $PATH and you'll see /sbin is missing. You can always add that if you want to.
