When I load a music CD into the CD drive, the music sounds garbled, plays a repeating

OS: Linux Fedora Core 4
Motherboard: PC CHIPS M811LU
CPU: AMD Duron 1.6
Sound Card: Encore 4 Channel Sound Card 32 bit (C-Media Chipset)
CD Drive: MAT****A CR-585

- Inserted an audio disc in the CD drive. On the Fedora Desktop, clicked on the "Audio Disc" icon. The music STARTED to play, but then all I got was a series of blips, like it was able to read only part of the sound, but not all. This continued while the whole song was playing.
- From the Desktop, clicked on Applications.Sound and Video, then on all the options there, one at a time. Here is a list of the choices and what happened with each:
- CD Player (seems to be the same as when clicking on the "Audio Disc" icon
- Helix Player (I let it load the whole CD, and gave it overnight. When I came back the next morning, it had loaded all the songs, and I was able to play them! Great...)
- Music Player (Nothing happened. No choices.)
- Sound Juicer CD Ripper (This seemed to also give hope, as the actual title of the CD, and the individual selections appeared. But it wants to "load" each song, one at a time. Apparently, this will take over an hour, according the the number of minutes indicated. I let it start loading.)
- Totem Movie Player (Starts to play sound, but then fails.)

Can't I just load a music CD into the drive and have it play? Does it have to load and convert every single song I want to play before I can hear it? Isn't there a better way to do this?
