I am unable to get my printer to print with fedora

I use a Lexmark Z43 and let the system set it up. I send a print job and get no response at all. I am using lpt0. I have looked in logs to see what is going on but there is nothing pertaining to the printer unless, cups is started correctly. I did not know I had setup cups to work. :?

there are three reasons a printer don't print.
1. the port isn't turned on in the bios or the port is set to wrong type.
2. the printer is not turned on.
3. the wrong driver for the printer is installed.

did it actually say that the port was lpt0 or lp0? go to the PRINT MANAGER ICON and click on it.

right click on the printer and go to properties

enter the root password, if your not logged in as root this will get you the permission required to manipulate the system files.

in the screen that pops up you you can highlight the printer and then click EDIT button at top.

under Queue Type you will see the actuall port name for the printer; note the port down. now close that screen by clicking cancel.

back on the printer configuration screen you just need to click on TEST in the menu and tell it the US Letter Postrciprt or the ASCII page and the printer should print and a prompt will appear asking if it was okay.

if it don't print then go back into the properties and go to the driver tab and select a different driver for the printer and try the print test again.

if you don't get a good print remove and reinstall the printer and try again.

if you do get a good print then you should be able to go to the terminal window and issue the following command:

cat (space) somefile name (space) >/dev/[name of the device found above]

this should send a the "somefile name" to the printer and it should be recognizable.

this even works with usb printers.
