Unhappy Dell LS 400 hangs while initializing peripherals

I'm newbie with Linux.
I downloaded the latest Fedora and installed it on
DELL LS 400 Laptop with 256 MB memory and 10GB HDD.
The boot area is 200MB
Swap is 1GB.

I only did install of KDE and a web-browser.
The installation went fine.

However, when I login the computer hangs at 42% - Initializing Peripherals.
I have tried re-installing it a couple of times including GNOME desktop, but it just refuses to move. Having said that it works fine in FAILSAFE mode and I'm able to login/logoff/shutdown.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Regards,
Maulik Thakkar
