options to tackle sound!?

I am trying to get my ess1869 sound card to work. I think I have a couple of options to get it to work; modify the kernel or modprobe.conf. Is this true? I had a feeling editing modprobe.conf may be an easier route, but I am not sure. I think I made the correct changes, but I am not getting any results. I added an alias:

alias sha384 sha512
alias snd-card-0 snd-es18xx
install binfmt-0000 /bin/true

I have looked at the tutorials, but have not seen info. on this. Any direction to go? How about the kernel route? If so, how do I get make menuconfig to work. I have been signing in as root into /dev/ in an attempt to do this but I am working blind here. Any thisought or direction with this? Thanks
