Strange behaviour then total crash

My usually rock-solid FC4 box did something strange this morning. I got a message saying some process had quit unexpectedly (it wasn't anything that I recognised and it wasn't a memorable name), then Volume Control did the same thing. And a few seconds later, the whole thing crashed completely. The bottom half of the screen was magenta, the top half black with wavy blue lines, and that was it. Nothing else I could do but hit the reset button.

If this had been a Windows box my first thoughts would have been "virus". Are there any viruses or other nasties that can affect Linux?

It's been fine since I rebooted it.
