Install Nvidia Driver

I've downloaded the latest nvidia driver and can't seem to install unless i get out of X . I've tried the telinit command but nothing happens , Anyone got any ideas?

What do you mean 'nothing happens' when you try telinit? If you're getting errors regarding not being able to find the command telinit, you need to properly become root (use su -) - Don't forget the hyphen! (or just su, then execute /sbin/telinit 3)

You must have X terminated before atteming Nvidia driver installation.
