Well im new to this forum and new to linux too.I was inspired to install linux by the people at Ubuntu.Currently i'm using Fedora Core 4 and feel that its much better than the Windows XP.
I dont know how the things on this forum works out.I've tried searching before posting but since i didn't got any answers to my questions thats why im posting the ques here.
Whenever i try to play any MPEG file or a DAT file in Totem Video player that is installed on my PC i get an error saying that "Plugin Required is not installed".What should i do???

Is this a fresh install of FC4? What version of Totem are you running.

In a terminal type:
rpm -qa | grep totem

Thumbs up

download and install this rpm.

if you want, you can install the other gstreamer plugins too.

I strongly suggest you to uninstall HelixPlayer and Totem, and replace them with mplayer.
Mplayer is lightning-fast and supports EVERYTHING.

Make sure you have the freshrpms repository set up in your /etc/yum.conf:

Code:
[freshrpms]
name=Red Hat Linux FC4
baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/freshrpms
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
then just issue a:

Code:
yum install mplayer
And have fun.

Do this, in a terminal as root:
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/4/i386/R...5.4.noarch.rpm
rpm -e totem
yum install totem-xine
rpm -ihv ftp://ftp.icm.edu.pl/vol/rzm/greysec...412-1.i386.rpm
rpm -ihv ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/sourcefo...704-1.i386.rpm

Have Fun!

EDIT: Note: For the links you can't cut-paste, ff.org made an abreviation. Put your mouse over the link, then in the status bar at the bottom you see the real link.

If you install Xine, Mplayer, mplayerplug-in and the extra codecs as described here you will be able to play web embedded media in your browser as well as view DVDs and play virtually any type of video format.

I thank you all for your response.I was searching on the net also for this.
The final thing i've come up with is that i should uninstall Totem and Helix and Install Mplayer.Well as i write this i'm also downloading Mplayer and "gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.8.6-2.2.fc4.i386.rpm" as both of them can solve my problem.I'll try installing Mplayer and post the results over here.

I also have one more problem :
Sound on my FC4 was working fine after i reinstalled FC4 3-4 times.I don't know what happened suddenly,one fine day i see a warning message as i booted into KDE shell regarding audio initialization and some error stating that audio drivers not found in /dev/dsp something like this.From that time onwards i'm not able to play audio on FC4.
Xmms player that i used played MP3's really good but now it has also stopped playing any type of audio.It says check sound card.
When i use the feature Detect sound Card that is available in FC4.It correctly shows sound card ( " Fortmedia "),its model number and distributor.But when i click on play sound it plays nothing.
What should i do?

Thanks

Thank you all for your response.I installed gstreamer ffmpeg codec/libraries onto my PC and my problem was solved.Now every video application plays MPEG/DAT video's on my Computer.I installed mp3 codec also and every app started working fine.
I read on the net that xmms and Mplayer are the best apps for running mp3 and video files respectively.So i installed xmms and its mp3 plugin.Its working fine.
I'm downloading Mplayer right now and i've downloaded a 12.3 MB file named 20050412.tar.gz containing all the codecs for various file types.Ill install that and post the results.I'm still facing the audio problem on FC4.Sometimes the audio output is OK but sometimes it says that there was an error in initializing sound drivers.
