Canīt install Fedora Core 1 on my Dimension 8100 (No chance)
Hi out there ...
As a linux newbie (but not pc newbie) I read a lot of theory and have
almost 3 linux distr. now. But when I try to install Fedora Core 1 on my
system i have no chance to do it.
When Iīm installing SuSE 9.0 there is no problem (just USB Optical
Trackball (I have solved this problem yet)) - but I bought a good book
for linux newbies with Fedora Core 1 DVD on it (3,5GB progs with it)
and I want to use it because of the great possibility in updating the
system via internet (apt get) with the right rpmīs.
Why there are so big differences on linux distr.?
Please Help !!!
See System- & Problem-Details below
System:
Dell Dimension 8100
P 4 - 1.4Ghz
128 Mb RamBus
20+8,5 GB Ide Harddisk
NEC DVDrom
AOpen CDrw
Nvidia Geforce 2 MX
PCtel HSP56 modem (winmodem I know !)
Monitor 1280x1024 - 85Hz
USB MS Intelli Optical Trackball
W2K is on the system (NTFS) - (dualboot no problem)
FC1 has 5 GB (256Mb swap - swap + 4,7GB / - ext3)
Problem & Questions:
1. graphical setup
Booting up system - starting FC1 graphical setup -
installing FC1 till Anaconda Setup appears -
detecting nvidia - detecting monitor unknown -
detecting MS usb intelli mouse -(all seams right till now) -
then Xserver for graphical setup starts
monitor goes blank and goes off power
setup seems to be going on in the background
but Iīm not able to do anything[/list:u]
2. text mode setup
Booting up system - starting FC1 text mode setup -
installing FC1 - installation goes fine -
no proplem appears till reboot
GRUB starts up - FC1 is the choice -
FC1 starting Xserver
monitor goes blank and goes off power
startup seems to be going on in the background
but Iīm not able to do anything
starting in text mode wents fine but Iīm a linux newbie
so I canīt do a lot with it.
but I also tried to configure /etc/X11/XF86config
via vi in textmode - nothing changed[/list:u]
3. same problems with Knoppix distr. (Linux non installing CD-Version)
4. with SuSE 9.0 all wents fine also in graphical installing mode ! Why?
5. Whatīs wrong with my system or FC1
6. Iīve tried a lot of tips eg.:
booting:
allowcddma
ide=nodma
apm=off
nofb[/list:u]
installing:
linux ide=nodma
linux allowcddma
linuxacpi=off[/list:u]
7. I also tried to configure /etc/X11/XF86config via vi in textmode -
nothing seems to help !
As you can see on my lot of details & writing here -
I really need help and it would be a great expierence being helped
by the often told "great LINUX Community".
I hope some LINUX Experts find my Questions and can help me
in a way I could follow.
Last: Please forgive me my bad english (Iīm an austrian).
Please Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi digital empire,
You need to visit NVIDIA's driver download section and download the linux drivers (.run file) to get X working with your GeforceFX Go card.

If you can see grub, put the number 3 at the end of all your kernel arguments.

Hi digital empire,
You may want to review http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-5336.html
All the neccesary steps are on that page. If you can get into a console, telinit 3 would do the trick (su -)
