Question graphics problem - trailing windows

Hi-

I installed Fedora a couple of months back with an ATI 7000 64MB grahics card. I had problems with graphics performance - in particular, when closing windows they would trail whilst closing.
I put this down to the supposedly poor support for ATI cards. However, I now have an Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440 card and the problem has persisted.
I installed the drivers as per the Core 4 installation notes : http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...es.html#nVidia
My monitor is a CRT Belinea 103010.
I have done a clean install with the card so it's not an issue with changing cards.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

go to www.fedorafaq.org and see 3D drivers actvation section for ATI & nVidia.
this may help your problem.

how much on-board video memory does the GeForce4 card have?

is this an AGP card? if so, how much graphics aperture memory is your bios setup with?

does the xorg log (in /var/log dirctory) look ok? how much video memory does the log report?

Thank you for your reply and suggestions.
The card has 128MB of memory and is AGP. The aperture size in the BIOS was set ot 64 so I changed this to 128. The log reports the correct amount of memory.
The Xorg.log file shows some problem with refresh rates:
config file hsync range 30-71kHz not within DDC hsync ranges.
config file vrefresh range 43-85Hz not within DDC vrefresh ranges.

The manual for my monitor says the refresh rates are 30-86 Horizontal and 50-150 Vertical but I've tried these values but to no avail. I've got an install of Suse and it seems to be using the 30-71 and 43-85 range and the graphics performance is much better than with Fedora.

3D acceleration seems to be configured. Here is the output from glxgears:
12827 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2565.400 FPS
13894 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2778.800 FPS
13939 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2787.800 FPS
13941 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2788.200 FPS
13936 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2787.200 FPS

I've played some games with the current configuration and the performance is good. The problem seems to be with the trailing windows I mentioned in the original post.
It looks very shabby.
Any further hints greatly appreciated.

Dont bother with ATIs Drivers if you have a 7000, I have a 9200 and Installing ATIs drivers decrease performance for me, (I think this is because the specs for the 9200 have been released, so if you have a 9600 or better ATIs drivers are better)

I do actually have a 7000 - 64MB. But the nvidia is 128MB so I'm inclined to stick with it, even though the problem has persisted. But thanks for your suggestion.

I've asked a similar question. I see slow refreshes when windows are dragged around the screen. Search for the subject "Window manager performance" in the "General Support forum.. I've noticed this ever since redhat 7.x and just chalked it up to XFree86's and Xorg's poor driver support. However, it seems like the primary purpose of third party drivers is to improve 3d performance, not the 2d performance of moving windows about. It makes me curious if the new compositing manager technology in AIGLX will fix the problem.
