Skype for linux (FC4), microphone issues

Hi all,

I have installed skype for linux and hence need to get my microphone to work. It works fine attached to my minidisc recorder so there is nothing wrong with the microphone itself. I'm using the onboard SiS sound controller on my Gigabyte mobo. Sound output (5.1, AC97 codec) is fine, but the microphone isn't working at all. Running Fedora Core 4.

Any advice much appreciated,

Laura.

Just to cover simple stuff, in volume control (properties, whatever it is when you right click on the little speaker icon) the mic is not muted, is it?

Other than that, have you tried a search on the forums? I remember reading some threads about mic woes last week.

Is the audio card running? Maybe the card driver doesn't work very well...
Can you change it?

Bye

In a terminal, as root

Code:
# alsamixer
Turn up the microphone and if there is a mic boost, I suggest you use that as well - probably uses mute (use the 'm' key).

After you have set that use:

Code:
# alsactl store
So you do not have to reset it everytime you reboot.

You may also have to change "Volume control" (as brandor's post) as well.

I had a similar problem and could solve it in a very strange way:
I simple pluged the mic-plug not into the mice-pipe(I do not know the english name for the hole),
but into the line-in-plug and it worked OK since very much troubles with turning on and off various buttons.
This simple way cold solve the troubles.
Hope it wil work with you
