At the grub boot screen, try hitting "E" to edit your boot arguments, and append the nousb kernel argument.
It'll look something like this once you're done:
[code:1]kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-28.9 ro root=LABEL=/ nousb
I believe after you're done doing that, you hit "B" or enter (I don't have it in front of me) to boot.
Hope that helps.
(If that boots fine, you need to find out if your USB chipset is supported and/or why it's causing problems)
