I guess you're already asleep by now. Anyways, I was wondering when you said D-Link would be easy..Here is the exact name and specs of this card.
D-Link DWL-650 2.4GHz Wireless Cardbus Adapter.
* Also, I need this to work ; so tell me any card that will work...
* How about the Senao 2511, I've heard a lot about that being great...
* Here is the Link for that Card..Tell me if that will work or any other card that you can suggest...

I've heard alot about those cards working quite well, especially for wireless sniffing purposes. I don't have first hand experience with it, however.
If you were wondering, I use an now-extinct Orinoco Wireless Silver card, with recompiled kernel/hacked drivers for promisc. mode. I also have a SMC EZConnect SMC2635W lying around on my desk, however I have yet to try it which is very popular at BestBuy/Compusa/etc. I'm going to try this tonight while in bed, with the laptop (if I get it working, they are nice and cheap)

I think the D-Link that I have is a newer one..Do you think we could make that work?
Also, if all this works out..I will owe you big time and then when I move to Virginia; Drinks would be on me for you being a wondeful guy.

This card doesn't have the ability to be put into monitoring mode (or at least not any way I know).
pcmcia-cs is built into the kernel.
Your omega market no-name-brand card will do you more damage than good.
Is there a need to be on linux, by the way? You are aware there's a similar product called NetStumbler, for Windows right?

NetStumbler..Is that for download and will that work with any Wireless Card in Windows..
That would be a good addition, but I really need to do this in Linux..
So what about D-Link DWL-650 that I mentioned earlier that you said was a piece of cake..Can we set that up???
Tell me any card that will work please and help me set that up please.
It is late here and I'm sure even late at DC...So I will look for your reply tonite, if not tomorrow in the morning

Hi kuknoppix,
http://www.netstumbler.com/ is where you can find NetStumbler. The DLink card will not work with AirSnort/etc. either so that's a no-go.
Setting it up may be a piece of cake, but it will not work with Airsnort/Kismet/etc. Are you still having problems with that card??

Well I got NetStumbler to work with the D-Link DWL-650 but I don't think it cracks WEP passwords... or maybe it does and I don't know, could you tell me how if it does?
Anyways since we are on this subject, do you know if I can find the source code for NetStumbler and where?
Also here is another one for Windows that does crack WEP passwords,
Do you think, I can find a free one for download or should I purchase this?
Please advise.

I still want to make this card(D-Link) work with Linux, I was hoping you could help me out. But you are saying that this is not going to work with Airsnort...Why?
Well these are my questions:
(1) Do you know where I can find the source code for NetStumbler?
(2) Airsnort for Windows, which is pre-compiled link below...I can;t run it..Can you try that and help me out with that?
http://www.wireless-bern.ch/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&r eq=getit&lid=28
(3) And finally, can you help me set up the D-Link Card to work with Linux?
Thanks for all your help.

1) There is no source code available, as the site says in their FAQ.
2) AirSnort for windows is unstable and extremely alpha and requires driver patching.
AirSnort linux/win32 only supports:
- Cisco Aironet
- Prism2 based cards using wlan-ng drivers
- Orinoco cards and clones using patched orinoco_cs drivers
You don't possess any cards of these type.
3) I need the lspci output when your DLink card is inserted.

Understood...here is the output that you requested.
I also had an issue about my USB Key chain not mounting in Fedora...
Will post that with the results in the new thread with some info.

I'm getting your DLink card is:
[code:1]02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 168c:0013 (rev 01)[/code:1]
If you're sure it's a D-Link DWL-650, go back into /etc/pcmcia/config and replace...
[code:1]card "D-Link DWL-650"
manfid 0x0156, 0x0002
bind "wvlan_cs"[/code:1]
... with ...
[code:1]card "D-Link DWL-650"
manfid 0x168c, 0x0013
bind "wvlan_cs"[/code:1]
Try that.

lsmod - initializing
vorte[x], all you have written here has saved some of us a lot of time, thanks!
But here is the deal. insmod rtl8180_24x.o works fine, but when I go and do a lsmod, the rtl8180_24x module shows as "initializing" and gets stuck there.
When I issue ifconfig, no output is shown. This is probably the problem kuknoppix had before.
If you have an idea of how to get arround this please let us know. Anyway, when I get the chance I'll work on it a bit and post the solution, if I'm successfull (unlikely)
thanks for all!
