I have installed FC4 on an external USB drive. Installation proceeded without errors but problems occurs when I tried to boot from the USB drive.
First, my old Lilo bootloader started even thought Grub was installed. I wrote 0 to the boot sector and re-installed FC4.
Second attempt: FC4 installed without errors and when I tried to reboot I only saw a black screen with Grub written in the top left corner. Nothing happened... Tried to re-install again.
Third attempt: As before, the installation went without errors. When I rebooted the system Grub started correctly, but when the Linux boot started I got a message that the filesystem on the drive was ext2 (I selected ext3 during install) and "Kernel panic. Mount point / not found".
Fourth attempt: Tried to install FC4 on ext2 filesystem. Same problem as in the second attempt. Grub didn't start.
Before trying to install FC4 on my USB drive, I tried Mandrake 10.1. That installation went okay. The first boot succeeded, but when I tried to shut down the system I got a lot of error messages that filesystem was Read-only.
It clearly seems that there are some strange issues regarding install to USB drives. Anyone know what can be the problem? I use a 30GB LaCie drive.
I would be very thankful for any help regarding this problem.
