error: can't create transaction lock

I have been trying to install a couple of rpms from the installation cds and keep getting the following error msg:

error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/__db.000

I have removed old lock files, verified the database and rebuilt the database, all to no avail.

Can anyone out there please assist me in getting on top of this? Thanks

I deserved that.

I did not run as root. I ran every other command as root but the rpm -Uvh command.

I will go stand in the corner now.

im hanging my head in shame as i had the same problem and did the same thing.

It's lucky we're not branded for life, thus making us easily identifiable to other Linux users as the guys who tried to rpm without root.
