WEIRD! Upgraded from FC3 to FC4. Can't type anymore unless I'm root

I've upgraded from Fedora Core 3 to Fedora Core 4. Everything went well.

I reboot. Log in with my non-root username and password. No problem.

But then.... I can't type anywhere. In a terminal window, in a web browser's URL bar, in a text editor, etc. When I type the cursor "flashes" per keystroke, but nothing happens.

I log out and log back in. Same issue.

I log out and log back in as root. I can type no problem.

Anybody experience this? So weird.... What permissions control keyboard typing that I need to modify to allow non-root users to type?

PS: I've pressed CTRL + ALT + F2 just now. Opened up a new session (non-X windows). I've logged in as my non root username and can type. So it seems to only affect X-Windows for some reason. What a strange bug.

Perhaps related... when I log in as a non-root, I get some kind of error message related to not having access to volume control. When I log in as root, no such issue..

OK. I've run another test. This time logging in as a different non root user (i.e. my dad's account). I can type.

So for whatever reason, only my personal non-root account has an issue with being unable to type. Like I said I can see the cursor flash, and with every keystroke the cursor "blinks", but nothing happens. It doesn't move, and no text is entered.

I've fixed the problem. The solution is pretty simple...

I logged in as root, and deleted the directory

/home/<my username>/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard

When I logged back into X-windows with my account, the keyboard directory was automatically re-created and I was able to type again. Problem fixed.

Perhaps under FC3 I configured something for my keyboard settings that isn't compatible with FC4.

Well done. I realise there is no reason to post (as you've fixed it yourself), but your solution was quite simple and clever (I thought) and so you deserved some recognition.

Again,

Well done!
