A few questions / thoughts:
What is your out-put of:
$ ls /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
$ ls /opt/jre1.5.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/
You should have
libjavaplugin_oji.so listed in both ?
If you do then check FireFox
/Edit/Preferences/WebFeatures/ to ensure that Java has been enabled. You can also type
about : plugins in Firefox to see if the Java Plugin is listed.
If it is both listed and enabled in FF then check to see that you do not have another or previous java plugin installation on a different Browser still present?. Since, if I recall correctly, you can only configure one Browser to work with a Java plugin at a time.
If it is not listed then I believe that you have missed something when creating a symbolic link as described here :
