#*! chown /. -R HELP

WHAT HAVE I DONE!!
I just did - chown root /. -R (dont ask why!)
Ive corrected the samba shares and user dir, but what am I to do with the applications. I have search online for some kind of repository that might list the default shares but found nothing, Im guessing my only chance to avoid potential future complication is to just reinstall EVERYTHING - anyone got an better (easier) solution....HELP!!! is there a command that can list file permission errors for a given application or something.

Reinstall, it will be easiest

You can gift each user their home directories again chmod -R user /home/user

but if you plan on running a server, you wil get 1000s of complications as apach is a user...

Hi.

You can try rpm -V. See the man page or rpm for details.

I hope it helps.

JuanCarlos - I took your advice and did a rpm -V of every package I could think of, most User faults were found on the /var dir. I expect that eventually I will have to do as Tejas said - a complete reinstall, but since this server is only functioning as a file server and gateway for a small ip network I'll try to delay the inevitable. The most packages im running are Squid, Samba, Sendmail, Clamav, VNC. Im about as newbie as they get (hence the the reason im in this situation) so Ive kept things simple - hopeful simple = stable too.
