two soundcards help

onboard sound: via onboard chipset 82xx
soundcard: audigy 2zs

ok, this wasn't an issue up until about maybe a week ago.
i've got this weird thing now whenever i start up Totem where it says ...

ALSA device "default" does not exist.

and so i went to look a little further with alsamixer and i get this as a message when i type "alsamixer" in the terminal:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

now i do get audio with mplayer, cedega, doom3, everything....

if i do "alsamixer -c 0" i get to configure the sound levels for my audigy2zs .
whenever i go to the sound card detection tool ihave my speakers plugged into m yaudigy 2 and when i press play test sound on the via tab, it actually plays a sound through my speakers (which means its not really testing the onboard sound but the audigy2). if i play test sound on the creative tab, i still get a sound (meaning again, its playing out of the audigy2 which is correct in this situation).

now why is it that the kernel is getting confused with the devices? it doesn't appear that the onboard sound even is recognized anymore to be honest, since in alsamixer -c 1 used to be my audigy 2 not -c 0.....

icould use some help here. anything would be great, i just would like to get alsamixer and/or totem to start working properly again. (alsamixer used to go to the onboard sound by default but since its no longer really there.. yeah)

do you use both sound cards? if not i assume you dont use the onboard sound - that means you should then be able to go in to the bios and disable it and then that will make it a bit simpler to start with.

well by default, no i do not use the onboard sound. but if i wanted to watch a dvd from my comp, i usually turn on the tv out, and i have made a cable that has both the s-video and the audio jack going to the tv, so i use the onboard audio for tv-out purposes, otherwise no i don't... i disabled the onboard audio and its working fine now.. but i'd like to get them both working in harmony

ah well, guess i could go on living without the onboard working anymore, it was working great before though hm ;( if you have any insight on the situation please help

ahhh i see what you mean now, well i think the sound quality would be better through your audigy2zs because thats what ive got in my comp but i did upgrade it from a sound blaster live value (16bit) lol...

anyways, is there somewhere in the settings where you can enable and disable one. I cant think of where and i dont have access to my linux comp at the mo because i think that would work. Leave one disabled and then when you want to use the other one you can just disable to one and enable the other. Whatever the hardware management bit is maybe?
