Red face FC4: kernel trap invalid operand

I have this trouble for quite a while. Either in gnome or kde desktop, applications I open in desktop crash frequently. For instance, all the firefox browser windows close automatically without warning. Following are two examples.

Aug 21 11:05:49 localhost kernel: gnome-panel[2698] trap invalid operand rip:3b2b91707b rsp:7fffffd1d3e0 error:0

Aug 22 10:39:42 localhost kernel: python[18113] trap invalid operand rip:3b2b91707b rsp:7fffffd66fa0 error:0

This also happens with gnome-term and other programs on desktop. I thought it is gnome problem, but now using kde also has the same problem.

My machine is amd64 with abit av8 motherboard, installed with FC4. gdm version is 2.6.0.8. I recently updated the BIOS.

This trouble prevents me from working on the machine normally. Any help would be nice.

It seems to be true that you have troubles with your memory chips...
Please, run several memory tests like memtest86+

Do you have the latest kernel installed? Also, it would be useful to run a memtest on the machine, these errors are sometimes caused by faulty memory. If you still have the fedora install media, boot from that and when the boot prompt comes up type "memtest86"

Thank you guys for reply. My kernel version is 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4, seeming to be the latest. I'll run memtest86 or memtest86+ and report to you guys.

Okay. I ran a memtest86+ standard test for 4 hours, did not detect any error (did not know I need to stop memtest86 manually!). I thought that the problem might be due to bios update. I updated bios again this afternoon, and will wait to see if the problems occur again.
