Had the same problem, until I realized my swapfile was too small.
The only way to get around it, for now, is not to download all headers, just stay with the default newer headers.

Pan is the best newsreader for Linux, that I have found.

Dave.

Yes, it is the best newsreader I've found, except for this high memory usage problem that's well known to heavy Pan users.

Here's a description of the problem:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/pa.../msg00025.html

and if you are into compiling source code, the latest CVS version, works much better in this regard, see here

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/pa.../msg00037.html

I currently use the CVS version and the greatly improved memory handling offsets the occasional crash. What the CVS version does is collate all the parts of a multi-part binary as it goes instead of waiting till the end. Makes a big difference.

Also, as the previous link mentions, there's another program called klibido. It's a KDE binary usenet downloader that handles large numbers of headers also. I've used it a bit and it seems to work. It also seems to be an "alive" project versus Pan which seems dormant.

Old Pan does not support .nzb files. However, the brand-new unstable 0.9x beta versions that just started coming out this month do. See the website: http://pan.rebelbase.com/
