Unhappy Playing DVD's on Linux

I just had to reinstall my FC3 box due to my own fault ( sometimes less is more). Reinstalling would not be such a bad thing if not that legal mambo jumbo with mp3's and DVD's. Support for those things should be built in into os with single package with out trying to collect 100 pieces allover to get your DVD movie to play. I know its a legal stuff but, Do we as the community have some way of putting pressure on companies like Sony and the rest of the RIAA Olsen gang?Maybe force them to let go things like mpeg, mp3, DVD and a lot of the other things they should not own in the first place. I’m waiting for some suggestions. I know some software patents are OK but give me a brake those things are getting ridiculous.

Best recommendation I can make.... use ogg :-/

I know its not the answer you're looking for in regards to all this, but the RIAA won't be changing their stance on DRM, mp3 is a proprietary format, etc. Want video? Theora will be 1.0 soon.

The RIAA/MPAA doesn't have patents on mpeg. See here for more info: http://web.media.mit.edu/~eds/mpeg-patents-faq
