Exclamation fstab error on line 8

I don't know what happened but after installing and on the first login to FC4 I got a nsg saying there was an error in fstab in line 8. I looked and here's what it looks like:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/shm /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
LABEL=/home /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sys /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
LABEL=¹W)Ï ªíO^W^\JÎ^@<8f>^N swap swap defaults 0 0

I need to put whatever in there to get my two CDROMs working too. If you can tell me what I need to do I'd appreciate it.

Greg

Your line 8, referring to swap should look similar to this:

LABEL=SWAP-hdc2 swap swap defaults 0 0

(you will need to replace hdc2 with your actual swap partition number). If you have trouble editing the lines, use the rescue-CD and mount your sysimage with chroot (explained on the disk when you start it). Then use e.g. nano to edit the file and save it.
CD-ROM entries should looksimilar to this:

/dev/hdb /media/cdrom auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
/dev/hda /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

If your system does not use removable usb devices, you can lock the fstab, so it will remain intact once you reboot your system. (Command is "chattr +i /etc/fstab" for locking, "chattr -i /etc/fstab" for unlocking).

Good luck.

Hi,
That was a big help. I entered the commands as you said and the only thing I noted was that the pamconsole command was highlighted on each line whereas the others weren't. The CDROM drives showed up, as did my ext. USB car reader so all that's good.

I noticed that my drives wouldn't auto start the CDs or open a folder with the contents though. Is there something I can do to make that happen?

I also had a problem with reading the cds after trying to do a software update. I'd read the CD, start my add programs option and choose my programs I wanted installed. When I was ready to click for it to start, it said the CD couldn't be read. It did this with both CD drives. But I could open the folders and read the contents without a problem. Do you have any ideas why that would happen or have a solution?

You're a big help, thanks alot!

Okay, it must have been the wrong time of day or something. It worked after the 14th try.

These seems to be a common issue with FC4 installs, where it labels the swap partition with some non-ASCII characters. Did it to me when I installed it and I've seen it elsewhere too.
