.htaccess not working?!

Hi,

I've created these files before on other systems, no probs. So the whole concept isnt entirely foreign to me. However I'm now making one on my FC4 box at home.

I started up my apache, no probs.

Created some files, no probs, it serves them up fine.

I created some cgi scripts in /cgi-bin .. works fine

I created my .htpasswd file in /var/www/.htpasswd
I created my .htaccess file in /var/www/cgi-bin/myscripts/.htaccess
I checked all the permissions, changed the owner to apache ... but I dont get challenged for a password at all..

I restarted the server a doezen times, checked the messgaes, and apache logs, no errors, and nothing out of the ordinary, yet I dont get challenged at all.

I check the stock httpd.conf file, and all the directives for .htaccess files, and they all appear ok. I feel like I'm on loony pills!

Any ideas why it's not picking up my files and challenging for authentication ?

Thanks, Linuxissues,

but I've got the hang of htpasswd, and used it to make my password file.
... it's not inside the web server URI
... permissions are correct
... I tried re-creating it with -m (MD5 encrypted passwords)

.. Still no joy, I dont get challenged for a password.

any other tips ? or can you be a bit more specific ?

In the httpd.conf search for the following lines:
<Directory "/var/www/cgi-bin">
AllowOverride None
Options None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>

Change the AllowOverride to All of any other possible value (See the man pages for possible values)

Or change the value of other directory for your needs

maybe it is an Selinux context problem. Did you create the file then 'move' it to the directory?? Cause if you move, then SElinux keeps the context of the original file, if you copy it into the proper directory, the the file assumes the context of that directory. Could this be the problem the the .htaccess file??

Are you sure /etc/httpd/httpd.conf doesn't have an "AllowOverride None" somewhere in there? I'd look in the configuration for that directory.
