Desktop not showing file until i log in again

Whenever I download something to my desktop i can see it in the desktop folder but not on the desktop. I've tried refreshing the desktop but i can only see it once i loggout then in. Please help

Click and the desktop and hit ctrl+R or open a terminal, type "killall gnome-panel" and hit enter.

i noticed this on FC3 more then 4 (and that is because I haven't saved anything directly to the desktop on 4 yet) because I learned when using 3, copy it to your home directory, then move it to the desktop. I did that because I couldn't figure out how to get the desktop display to refresh itself. Sort of annoying.
