Is This A Linux Friendly Rig?

I'm gonna get a new rig soon, and it will be a linux only PC (my old PC can run XP, hehe). I'm not gonna spend too much on cutting edge technology, just want a decent modern PC that will be relatively future proof. These are the components I'm thinking of:

Proc: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939)

Mobo: Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939) PCI-Express

Mem: Crucial 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 PC5300 667MHz Ballistix Dual Channel Kit

Graphics: XFX GeForce PCX6600 256MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express)

HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 Plus NCQ 250GB ST3250823AS SATA 8MB Cache

Media: LG GSA-4163BA 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)

I just wanted to know if anyone here knows of any problems with the rig I have in mind, any advice would also be very welcome. Many thanks.

My only recommendation is that you have an IDE DVD writer. (And that may well be one)

I think others on the forum have that mainboard, but I can't say I wouldn't recommend an MSI, but that would require a different choice of RAM. Ironically, my system is essentially parallel to yours in the way of components.

Excellent! The only thing I'm worried about is the sata HD. I would rather have sata obviously, but how is Linux support at the moment?

EDIT: Why is it ironic though

If you use Fedora Core 4, you shouldn't have a problem. I'm running Linux on an ASUS-A8N SLI Delux on a SATA harddrive, and I didn't have a problem with it.

I'm running FC4 on an MSI K8n Neo4 Platinum/SLI with a SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.2/140GB HDD. You should be fine.

Do you actually use the SLI? If so, does it work under Linux and are there any applications or games that support it? Not that I can afford 2 graphics cards right now but hey, maybe one day I'll be able to add one....

I know I'm not who you asked, but I have an SLI motherboard.

Right now I am not using SLI because I really don't want to shell out another 400 dollars for an identical video card. And, as far as I know, SLI is not actually supported under Linux. I believe (and I may be entirely incorrect on this) it's a driver issue (nVidia hasn't actually written support for SLI into the Linux drivers).

You may ask, why I bought an SLI motherboard if I don't use SLI. Well, the reason is, I couldn't find the non-SLI board with any ease and the SLI board was only thirty dollars more, so I figured what the hell.
