compiling new kernel takes forever
I donwnloaded a kernel source from kernel.org- 2.6.12.3 and decided to see what building the kernel was like and I've been working on it for an hour or so and still have a ways to go.
Its mostly because I didn't go through menuconfig and take out stuff my computer doesn't have, instead I only added things like ntfs write support (as well as read)
.. If you plan to build a kernel take out the stuff that doesn't pertain to your computer..
I'm sure I might find problems with the kernel probing for hardware I don't have and I will probably have to recompile but take out the stuff I don't need.

Yes, compiling your own kernel takes some time...
Just did it today!
But I have a new PC with an 3.2 GHz Intel HT. That rocks!!
Took me 23 minutes to compile it. But I only compiled features I realy need.

You have recompiled an FC4 kernel right, not the kernel from kernel.org? I got done compiling/installing from with my kernel.org kernel and rebooted to kernel errors, so I guess ill try to recompile a FC kernel.

Yes, i recompield an FC kernel.
This is recommendable, because the fedora development team makes some changes to
the vanilla kernel from kernel.org

yeah, comiling kernel can take a while. What's your computer MHz? I can imagine that anything below 3 GHz should take at least 1 hour..... IT depends on what optinos you compile it with.

also would you recommend built in functions or modules for the kernel? I read a tweak guide to faster boot time for FC4 and says to build in all you can, but that you have to know your hardware well. just wonderin if anyone had tried and compared these methods

When selecting only the kernel modules that I need, it takes ~45 minutes to compile a kernel.org kernel for FC3 on a P3 450Mhz with 640 MB RAM.

@steve941:
Yes, I compiled many things what I need in:
e.g.: acpi ext3, driver for graphics card, usb...
And things that I need not so often, I compiled as modules.
So at booting, the kernel doesn't have to load so much modules, because
things it needs are compiled in. And things I need during working are loaded
when they are needed.
