AMD64 install hangs at "looks like an initrd"

I am having a problem installing FC4 on an AMD64 system.
Details:

FC4 (AMD64 version)
AMD64 2.2 GHz
1GB RAM
K8N4-E Delux motherboard
200GB SATA harddisk
Generic ide DVD/CDR/RW

installing from CD's burned from downloaded iso images (checksum verified). Upon booting from CD1 and pressing enter to install linux the system hangs after the line:

Checking if the image is initramfs... it isn't; looks like an initrd

Does anyone know what the system is trying to do that is hanging it up? I have tried various options like noapci, nolapic, etc. Also, memtest86 hangs after 30% complete. I am not new to linux (started with redhat 4.0) but I am new to the 64bit stuff and also SATA. Any suggestions? Thank you. -dan

When I have used memtest86 as a floppy based program, it provided its own non-linux operating system If it works this way from the Linux install cd, then the problem is probably not confined to linux. You can find an memtest86 and a memtest86+ website. Try one of those from a floppy or cd. If the machine hangs, the problem is likely to be your hardware. Simple things to try with hardware are slowing down the clock used by memory and trying another video card.

Thanks for the info. I removed one of the 512MB memory sticks and the install was able to continue normally. One of my cd's failed the media check though, so I don't know yet what the end result will be. Thanks. -dan
