Quake 3 running out of memory in Core 4?

I just got to install Quake 3 Arena for old time sakes in my computer running Core 4. However while selecting my character's model, before I get to the end of the list, Quake complaints about Low Memory. Here's a read out of `free` while it does this:
Code:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 515752 509220 6532 0 10256 209268
-/+ buffers/cache: 289696 226056
Swap: 5800676 31028 5769648
The strange thing is that Top shows that Quake 3 is using only 137Mb of Resident Memory (RES) and 200Mb of virtual memory (199 VIRT). Thes two readings were in two different runs of the game, so that's why (I belive) you don't see the 199Mb in the Swap section of the free read out.

Anyone noticed this? Or better said, anyone still playing this game enough as to note this??

The steps to reproduce/induce this error are:
  1. Open up Quake3
  2. Browse the models for your character until you run out of memory.
  3. Check your memory usage and check Quake's memory usage.

Not a serious problem, but I found it to be... curious nonetheless.

TIA

Yeah, UT2K4 and Doom 3. Which I regularly play, but I found this odd, since I wanted a quick loading bloodbath game, and NOTHING beats Q3 at that
