doom 3 loads then hangs on "initialising menu"

hi!

Getting a problem trying to get doom 3 to run on my system (did get it working on ubuntu in the past, so I know at least the hardware can handle it!). Btw this is native linux doom 3 not wine/cedega.

Well, it kinda runs. It starts, then changes the screen mode to 640x480 and has the picture of mars in the background. In the foreground its displaying messages like "loading data" etc. It hangs when it gets to the message "initialising menu" for some reason.... I cant close the program (i guess alt-tab doesnt work nor does alt-ctrl-del because thats windows) I need to restart the x server with alt-ctrl-backspace.

I have an ati card, which is working with the fglrx drivers. I downloaded the *.run file from ati's website and installed that, followed by "fglrxconfig". fgl_gears runs the 3d spinning box and tuxracer runs smooth. My avg glxgears score is about 2000.

Could i be missing something in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

ctrl-Escape is the same as ctrl-alt-del on windows. (at least in the kde it is)

glxinfo | grep direct
What does that say?

[huw@localhost ~]$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
[huw@localhost ~]$

also, btw, tried ctrl-esc and it didnt unfortunately help quit the game..... i guess it may be the game, but it was definately working before! anything else I could try just now?
