seg fault trying to install Radeon 8500 ATi driver

I've just installed Core 1, (everything) onto a machine with an ATi Radeon 8500 64MB card. It's an "original" ATi-built card. The 2D driver provided with Core 1 installed with no problem and I'm now trying to install the ATi driver, fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm, as per the ATi instructions. I run rpm -Uhv <packagename>.rpm, but I get an immediate seg fault. I have deleted and re-downloaded the driver file (after clearing the browser cache), but still get a seg fault trying to install.

The system is a P3-733, on an AOpen AX63-U motherboard, VIA 694T chipset (Apollo Pro 133T), 768MB RAM, Ensonic ES-1371 soundcard, single 30GB IDE, single 52X IDE CD-ROM. I have installed all Core 1 updates using up2date, including the kernel (2.4.22-1.2129.nptl).

Any ideas?
